Job Description (if URL to posting not available). Please include instructions for how to apply.: Under general supervision, preserves and conserves historic public records following established preservation and conservation techniques, treatments and procedures.
Restores and preserves disintegrating public records by performing a variety of paper conservation tasks including surface cleaning, humidification, flattening, repair with Japanese tissue and heat set tissue, removal of pressure sensitive tapes, reduction of stains, solubility testing, media stabilization, washing, deacidification and buffering of delicate media, lining, encapsulation and limited treatment on non-paper materials. Repairs books from public and state collections including procedures such as recasing and resewing of text blocks. Constructs custom protective enclosures for rare/fragile materials. Write fully documented treatment proposals. Calibrates, operates and maintains conservation lab equipment, such as a pH meter,hygrothermographics, water distiller, microscope, Wei To soft spray deacidification unit and light meters.
Ensures the security and the appropriate environmental conditions of security stacks by planning and operating environmental monitoring system and maintaining equipment on a regular schedule of stack maintenance. Tasks include checking and maintaining equipment on a regular schedule, scheduling and monitoring periodic cleaning of security stacks and conducting periodic checks of mechanical infrastructure of stacks.
Develop, update and monitor the department’s disaster response/recovery plans. Tasks includes developing/updating current disaster recovery plan by working with divisions within the agency, coordinating and training of response team, maintaining up-to-date list of suppliers/resources and maintaining the department’s disaster recovery equipment and supplies.
Advises and provides assistance regarding historical and genealogical research to on-site researchers. Develops and conducts outreach to state and local agencies through appropriate preservation and conservation workshops and literature.
Masters degree in history, library science, or other related field. Specialized training in paper conservation techniques. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of archival theory, practice and research. Knowledge of conservation techniques and treatments. Ability to perform duties requiring superior manual dexterity. Ability to perform book repair techniques. Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing. Ability to lift 40 lbs. to shoulder height.
