Job Title: Archivist, Vintage Motor Cycle Club (VMCC)
Location: Allen House, Wetmore Road, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire DE14 1TR
Responsible to: VMCC National Secretary / General Manager
Terms: Permanent. Full time role, 36 hours per week
VMCC is one of the leading Motor Cycle Clubs for vintage and classic motorcycles over 25 years old, with 15,000 members and 86 local and Non Territorial sections throughout the UK. We operate from Allen House, Burton-on-Trent with a mixture of volunteers and paid employees and pride ourselves on the service to members.
The Club’s Reference Library and Archive was first started in the 1960s as a service to members. Since that time it has grown very considerably and is now almost certainly one of the largest collections in the world of motorcycle related literature, information and records. It contains an extensive range of manufacturers sales literature and technical information, for both British and foreign machines, plus books, programmes, personal papers and technical drawings dating from the earliest days of motorcycling to the present day. The library and archive has virtually full sets of the important motorcycling magazines and the original Factory Dispatch Records for many of the largest British Manufactures. Much of the material is out of print and unavailable elsewhere. There is also an extensive photographic library.
The library and archive, which occupies the upper floor of Allen House, is run by a small team of full-time staff supported by part-time volunteers. It is open to both members and non-members of the club, who may call in person to carry out research or may employ the services of the team. Much of the research work is to establish the dating evidence in support of applications to the DVLA to obtain registration numbers.
The Club has recently undertaken a Library and Archive Survey as part of a plan to improve and expand this resource. The role will be to take the information gained from the report and along with a strategic document to lead the development, digitisation and expansion of the archive and library. You will be a well-motivated person, able to take the lead in all aspects of the library and archive resource acquisition, cataloguing and processing, whilst striving to develop the library and archive to enhance customer experience.
You should have the ability to work flexibly and efficiently on your own or as part of a team, and possess good interpersonal skills including the management of volunteer staff.
The post would suit either a person newly qualified in archives management, or an equivalently experienced and / or qualified professional archivist or special collections librarian looking to get back to hands-on work with collections.
Verbal and written communication. Good IT skills would be an advantage
