GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Archivist provides vision and leadership in directing and managing the newly consolidated archives for the School Sisters of Notre Dame in North America. The Archivist reviews, updates, and implements policies, procedures, and best practices for the acquisition, organization, preservation, and accessibility of materials that document the life and mission of the Congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND). Initially, this will involve visiting the current SSND Archives at eight sites in the United States and Canada and assisting in the relocation of these archives to the new consolidated archives at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Set goals and objectives that promote the vision and mission of the archives, foster collaboration in achieving these goals and objectives, and conduct ongoing assessment using a variety of methods to determine the effectiveness of services

• Review and update current policies and procedures to ensure:
 *The transfer to the archives on a regular and timely basis of records of enduring value documenting the life and mission of the congregation.
 *The appraisal, selection, accession, arrangement, description, and preservation of records in accordance with accepted standards and practices
 *The continued development of finding aids and databases
 *The prioritized digitization and/or reformatting of archival materials
 *The proper access to archival holdings and the timely response to requests for information

• Delegate responsibilities to appropriate staff, volunteers, and interns and evaluate performance
• Collaborate with SSND communications and development offices in the use of archival material for publications, websites, and social media, as well as in other appropriate ways
• Oversee space utilization, supplies, equipment, and general operation of the archives
• Participate in local, regional, and national archival associations

BASIC QUALIFICAITONS:
• Master’s degree with an archives emphasis at an ALA-accredited program
• Certification by Academy of Certified Archivists
• Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in archives administration, preferably in a religious organization
• In-depth knowledge of archival principles and practice, emerging technologies in archives, and professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities as archivist
• Ability to recognize and evaluate the historical value of documents, records and artifacts
• Excellent planning, organizational, budgeting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Ability to balance archival, financial, and operational perspectives in carrying out responsibilities
• Ability to maintain professional confidentiality
• Experience with varied formats of records including manuscripts, printed materials, photographs, audiovisual materials, and digital materials
• Knowledge of best practices for digital preservation and digitization, as well as current standards used in describing digital materials such as image, text, sound, and video
• Experience with database software such as Access, which is currently used in SSND archives
• Working knowledge of archival content management systems
• Knowledge of and/or the willingness to learn about the history, traditions, and mission of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Roman Catholic faith, and the history of the Catholic Church in North America

Would be helpful but not required

• Coursework in the SAA Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) curriculum
• Reading knowledge of German

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Frequent travel during the consolidation process; less travel after the consolidation is complete
