Please include instructions for how to apply.: The Archives & Special Collections Department at CSU Dominguez Hills is looking for two part-time archives processing assistants to complete arrangement and description work related to the Ninomiya Photo Studio Collection. This project starts a new phase of the California State University Japanese American Digitization Project (csujad.com). This project is funded through a generous grant from the Haynes Foundation.
The Ninomiya Photo Studio existed in the Little Tokyo area of Los Angeles between the 1920s and 1970s with a break during World War II. The Ninomiya Collection consists of 30 linear feet of photographs. There are approximately 10,000 negative packets with 3 to 10 negatives or prints.
Work on the Ninomiya Collection will initially consist of traditional archival re-housing, arrangement and description. This includes re-housing thousands of packets of negatives. Additionally, the project archival work will generate metadata in Excel and prepare the collection for digitization. At the end of the project, the employees will produce a finding aid published on the Online Archive of California, participate in the creation of metadata and possibly generate records on ContentDM.
BA in relevant field or enrollment in or recent graduate of an MA or MLS program/or equivalent archives experience.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Familiarity with archival theory and techniques: appraisal, accessioning, arrangement and description.
Familiarity with preservation practices, including digitization.
Familiarity with office software applications, especially Excel.
Ability to lift and move 40lb containers.
Positions are for 25 hours per week with pay at $16 an hour for 10 to 11 months. Hours are flexible, Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
